New York Launches System to Track Harmful Algal Blooms
US · Published Jun 12, 2026
New York State has activated the Harmful Algal Bloom System (NYHABS) for the 2026 notification season.
This system allows residents to electronically report harmful algal blooms (HABs) to the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) via a user-friendly form.

Why It's Important?

Harmful algal blooms can pose risks to public health, aquatic ecosystems, and recreational activities. Exposure to HABs may cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, or gastrointestinal symptoms in humans and animals. The DEC emphasizes the importance of public awareness and encourages residents to report suspected blooms. The system aims to reduce the frequency and impact of HABs by targeting nutrient pollution and advancing research efforts. Since 2021, New York has allocated over $424 million in grants to address these issues.
